Workshop (Calgary): Minute To Win It w/Joe Vanderhelm – The Kinkonauts

Rapid Fire Theatre’s Joe Vanderhelm

With a focus on short-form improvisation, this workshop will explore the importance of the first minute of the scene. You can’t build an awesome house without a strong foundation, and in this workshop you will focus on making sure that your improv platform is SUPER STRONG. “But what about endings?” you ask, well guess what? Everything you need to find a brilliant ending was there in the beginning. Remember that Nicolas Cage film from the year 2000: Gone in 60 Seconds? It will be just like that, only swap “stealing” for “starting” and “cars” for “amazing improv scenes”. All experience levels are welcome! Let’s “steal” some “cars”.

Since November of 1999, Joe Vanderhelm has been improvising with Rapid Fire Theatre, performing in their weekly shows TheatreSports and CHiMPROV. Joe has had the opportunity to participate in many improv festivals across Canada, The USA, Germany and the Reunion Island (off the coast of Madagascar). Joe Vanderhelm is Alberta’s Regional Director for the Canadian Improv Games and from 2006-2015 he was the Associate Artistic Director – Youth, of Rapid Fire Theatre. Since 2015 Joe has been the Director of Education for Rapid Fire Theatre, as such he produces the 3-week improv festival for teens: The WildFire Festival as well as the Northern Alberta Improv League; and he also oversees all public workshops in Rapid Fire Theatre’s Academy. When he isn’t improvising or acting, Joe works as a Science and Theatre teacher after having earned his Bachelor of Education, with a Drama minor, from the University of Alberta. Joe Vanderhelm was honoured to be awarded the 2015 Excellence in Teaching Award from the Province of Alberta, and in 2018 he was doubly-honoured to have a Rapid Fire Theatre Academy scholarship named after him.

This course is designed for students with some previous improv training. Not sure if that’s you? Email us at reactor@kinkonauts.com with any questions at all.
