Do you fantasize about being the next great Canadian Solo Theatre performer? Have you ever watched a one-person play and thought, “I could do that!”? Join Elena Belyea, creator of Miss Katelyn’s Grade Threes Prepare for the Inevitable and graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada’s Playwriting Program, for this in-depth crash-course in how to create and craft a brand new solo show from scratch. Through writing exercises, improvisations, and on-our-feet explorations, you’ll leave this class with a wide variety of tools for generating and refining new work, no matter what your genre. (Some performance/writing experience is useful but not necessary).

Elena Belyea is a queer performer, producer, and arts educator. She is founding Artistic Director of Tiny Bear Jaws through which she produces her own work, former Artistic Director of the Common Ground Arts Society and a co-founder of its Found Festival. She was a member of Nightwood Theatre’s 2016-2017 Write From The Hip Playwriting Unit where she developed her play Smoke. Her play Cleave won First Place in Major Matt Mason’s playwriting competition in 2015, and was shortlisted for the 2015 NNPN New Play Showcase, the 2016 Alberta Playwriting Competition, and the 2017 Herman Voaden National Playwriting Competition.
