What’s On (Calgary): OCD – Ghost River Theatre & Defiance Theatre

“What if there was something you could do, something simple, to keep something bad from happening?”

Ghost River Theatre teams up with the indie brat Defiance Theatre to present OCD, an
unforgettable solo show that examines the realities of mental illness in everyday sight.

Written and performed by Louise Casemore
Directed by Beth Dart – Dramaturged by Vern Thiessen
Presented by Ghost River Theatre / Created by Defiance Theatre
February 1-10th, West Village Theatre

OCD is about a person you might know, might be, or might have incorrectly thought you were. Winner of the 2016 Sterling Award for “Outstanding New Fringe Work” and Theatre Alberta’s “Pick of the Edmonton Fringe”, OCD is a comedy that dismantles the fourth wall in a way that audiences have never before seen. Running since 2015 in dirtbag bar basements, cavernous concert halls, and everything in between, it will now be landing at the West Village Theatre for it’s Calgary premiere.

Sold out favorite for fans and critics from Fort McMurray to Winnipeg, OCD sneaks in the back door of expectation to catch audiences off guard and humanize the stigmas surrounding mental health and its treatment. Incorporating the audience fully into the experience, OCD uses a mix of comedic storytelling as well as Casemore’s own personal experience with the disorder to bring real context to those suffering from more than just an affinity to keep things neat and clean. By the time the “real show” begins, there have been many laughs, potential for compassion or cruelty, and an A-HA moment the audience will not soon forget.
