MALACHITE THEATRE PRESENTS
TWELFTH NIGHT or What You Will
JANUARY 5-20, 2018 at 7:30pm
HOLY TRINITY ANGLICAN CHURCH
(10037 84 AVENUE NW, EDMONTON AB)
Internationally-acclaimed, UK-based Shakespeare director BENJAMIN BLYTH takes the helm with some of Alberta’s finest theatrical talent in Malachite Theatre’s brand new production of TWELFTH NIGHT from JANUARY 5-20 at HOLY TRINITY ANGLICAN CHURCH (10037 84 AVENUE).
Set in the deep snows of the Canadian winter, the shipwrecked Viola (MERRAN CARR-WIGGIN) has been saved from the sea. Believing her twin brother Sebastian (ANDREW CORMIER) to be drowned, she makes her way in this brave new world disguised as a boy in the service of the melancholy Duke, Orsino (GRINDSTONE THEATRE’S BYRON MARTIN). Meanwhile at the court of Countess Olivia (DANIELLE LAROSE), Christmas is over but no one is going home! With the seasonal liquor cabinet running dangerously low, Sir Toby Belch (WILLIAM MITCHELL) resolves to make this year’s holiday the family reunion of a lifetime!
“Shakespeare’s Illyria is a mystical and boisterous place” says East-London’s distinguished Shakespeare director BENJAMIN BLYTH, who is in Alberta pursuing his PhD in Shakespeare’s early plays at the University of Calgary. An alumnus of the University of Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, BLYTH’s TWELFTH NIGHT is set “somewhere between the classic world of Shakespeare’s text and the contemporary Albertan winter.” Filled with mirth, madness and melancholy, TWELFTH NIGHT “follows the hilarious and heart-warming story of two twins, separated by the sea and ultimately reunited by love”.
Featuring a beautiful live choral arrangement and an outstanding cast of home-grown talent, TWELFTH NIGHT is a bittersweet love song to the Canadian winter and promises to be a theatrical highlight of the season.
