Everett Klippert was the last person to be tried, convicted, and jailed for homosexuality in Canada. Pierre Trudeau, acting as Justice Minister, referred to the case with ‘there’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation.’ Maxine, a young historian today, becomes consumed with finding out who he really was, past the headlines. This is the story of the struggle to define Klippert, beyond what history wants and needs him to be.
Third Street Theatre is dedicated to the positive promotion of queer culture, stories, and voices, with a focus on production, mentorship, and the artistic development of queer and queer-minded talent. We are committed to work that engages and educates the community on relevant social issues pertaining to the often marginalized queer community.
Calgary Gay History Project: We are curious about what life was like for gay people in Calgary in the middle of the last century. This project also has an oral history preservation agenda; We hope to document stories from LGBTQ elders in Calgary whose stories should be recorded before they are lost.
Sage Theatre tells bold, intimate, thoughtful stories of the human condition through live performance. We provide a platform for Calgary and Alberta theatre artists to excel. We foster the next generation of theatre artists by engaging them and connecting them to the professional community.
EVERETT (GEORGE) KLIPPERT: A man of average height/build with dark hair. He went by his first name, Everett for most of his life but after being released from prison went by George.
HANDSOME: Plays various lovers of Klippert
MAXINE: Aspiring Professor of Canadian History
TONYA: A comedian of Métis Ancestry
