News (Edmonton): Fringe Theatre Proud to Announce Westbury Family Theatre Award

Fringe Theatre is proud to announce the Westbury Family Theatre Award. This annual award will provide one local artist, group, or company with $25,000 in funding towards the creation of a new work to be presented as part of the Fringe Theatre Spotlight program in the following season. The award is given annually and includes $5,000 cash, a theatre venue for the rehearsal and run of the show, technicians, and more.

This award honours Drs. Robert & Marilyn Westbury, who have provided a lifetime of leadership and generosity towards theatre arts. This award is funded through a legacy endowment, ensuring artists have the resources to create new and exciting theatre for generations to come.

This award will allow us to lift up local theatre artists by providing significant financial and mentorship support for the creation of a new work,” said Artist Director Murray Utas. “Fringe Theatre is known for fostering artistic opportunity for theatre professionals at all levels of their career. This award will allow us to meaningfully invest in the local community, while creating valuable opportunity for new work in our theatre season.

The Westbury Family Theatre Award is open to emerging and established theatre professionals in the Edmonton area. The deadline to submit is 11:59pm MST on December 31, 2017.

History

For nearly two decades Dr.’s Robert & Marilyn Westbury have been indispensable advocates for Fringe Theatre. Through their leadership, Fringe Theatre has blossomed from a small, grassroots organization into a global leader – producing the largest Fringe Festival in North America, with more than 800,000 visits a year, in addition to a full season of theatre and support programs!

From serving on the Board of Directors and chairing the ATB Financial Arts Barns redevelopment capital campaign, to personally hosting fundraising dinners for Fringe Theatre, the Westbury’s passion and unwavering support has reshaped theatre in Edmonton. Through their leadership, Fringe Theatre has become internationally recognized as a pioneer in the industry. This award honours the Westbury’s lifetime commitment to artists, ensuring they have the support and resources necessary for generations to come.

Special thanks to the friends and family of the Westbury’s, who established the Westbury Family Legacy Fund through which this award is endowed.
