The Other Side of the Pole
Written by Stephen Heatley with Marney Heatley and Edward Connell

When eight-year old Sandy befriends Willy, a young man with an intellectual disablility, she makes a surprise discovery that leads them to team up to uncover a special family secret. Much like Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, The Other Side of the Pole is a holiday musical that conjures up the Spirit of Christmas.

Roles:

The play requires 6 actors to play elves of indeterminate age and gender.

Except for the actors playing Willy and Mylar, each actor plays two parts, that of an elf in Santa’s workshop and that of a character in a play the elves present.

The characters in this play-within-the-play are:
· Willy: a male person with an intellectual disability; aged 15 – 25
· Sandy: a young girl, about 7 years old
· Pix: Sandy’s mother, aged 30-40
· Alex: Sandy’s father, aged 30-40
· John Smith: a visitor, aged 20-60

The sixth character is:

· Mylar: a potential elf who doesn’t quite get Christmas, any age
