The Department of Drama within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta invites applications for the tenured position of Department Chair at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Offering liberal arts programs leading to BA, BA Honours and MA degrees, and conservatory programs leading to BFA degrees in Acting, Design, and Technical Theatre, and MFA degrees in Directing, Design, Voice Pedagogy, and Theatre Practice as well as a PhD in Performance Studies, the Department is committed to the training and education of individuals who will provide vision and leadership for the future of Canadian theatre. Graduates from all programs have significant records of achievement on a national and international scale.
With 250 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate students, the Department is supported by 19 faculty, three faculty service officers (FSO’s), an assistant chair administration, a production manager, five admin staff, and six production staff. It produces a five show season for the general public showcasing students from the BFA and MFA programs, roughly 20 in-house productions a year, and provides significant extra-curricular opportunities for students.
Required qualifications are a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in theatre or related field, professional experience in the theatre, prior administrative and teaching experience at the university level, and a record of artistic and/or scholarly endeavors that meets the University’s standards for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong record of administrative leadership, producing experience, and the ability to lead a department through a rapidly changing 21st century.
The successful candidate will have a strong sense of collaborative leadership and a clear commitment to continuing to develop the Department’s standing within the University, within Canada, and internationally; will bring appreciation and respect for the unique contributions of members of the theatre department and be committed to fostering diversity, inclusion, and intercultural and interdisciplinary collaboration; will teach in their area of specialization; be responsible for Studio Theatre programming, and the management of the Timms Centre for the Arts.
The position comes with a comprehensive benefits package, research allowance, and salary (negotiable) commensurate with experience and rank. The appointment is normally for a five-year term (with the possibility of a second term) and will commence July 1, 2018 (or as soon thereafter as the ideal candidate is available).
