Stamina, Strength, and Agility of the Body, Mind, and Heart

The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program, part of the Citadel’s Academy, offers an advanced creative development program to enrich the skills of established theatre professionals. Now in its tenth year, the Professional Theatre Program provides a unique creative development opportunity for Canadian theatre artists.

The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program is designed to embrace and enhance the artist’s strengths while encouraging the exploration of new concepts. There are two streams to the program, Acting and Directing. Participants in the Acting Program take classes and workshops in scene study, movement/dance, singing, voice and speech, stage combat, classical text, improvisation and script analysis led by a faculty of some of Canada’s leading theatre artists.

The Intern Director Program comprises four weeks at The Banff Centre, taking part in classes alongside the participants of the acting program, and assisting the directors of the scene study units. There will also be seminars in directing, design, and theatre production. When the Program shifts to Edmonton, they will participate in seminars with the Citadel’s administrative, marketing, and production staff.

For 2018, the Citadel is seeking two Intern Directors who will take part in the training aspect of the Program in Banff and Edmonton. The Intern Directors will also work as assistant directors on either of our main stage productions: Mamma Mia! with director Ashlie Corcoran or The Silver Arrow: The Untold Story of Robin Hood with director Daryl Cloran.

The Citadel is seeking applicants from the professional community, including established and emerging artists from across Canada. Some professional directing experience is preferred but not essential.

The dates for the Program are as follows:

  • January 23 – February 22, 2018: One Intern Director will work as the assistant director on Mamma Mia! at the Citadel.
  • February 18 – March 18, 2018: The two Intern Directors will train at the Banff Centre with the Program participants. (*Please note: Mamma Mia! Intern Director will join after opening on Feb. 23, 2018).
  • March 20 – March 22, 2018: The two Intern Directors will continue training in Edmonton, at the Citadel.
  • March 23 – April 26, 2018: One Intern Director will work as the assistant director on The Silver Arrow: The Untold Story of Robin Hood at the Citadel.

The position includes:

  • Participation in and observation of certain classes and professional development workshops including: movement, voice, singing, improvisation, stage combat, preparation techniques, mask, clown technique, and text analysis.
  • Assisting the directors of the scene study and creation workshops in Banff.
  • Taking part in directing seminars with faculty and participants of the Professional Theatre Program.
  • Directing a short project, chosen in consultation with the Director of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. The project will be cast with members of the CBCPTP acting company. The project will rehearse in Banff and culminate in a one-night public presentation in Edmonton at the Citadel Theatre. The production will be presented in a laboratory environment with minimal production support – with an emphasis on working with actors, and utilizing techniques learned during the training in Banff.
  • Assisting the creative team of Mamma Mia! or The Silver Arrow: The Untold Story of Robin Hood in rehearsals (including the director, the designers, etc.)
  • Assisting the creative team during technical rehearsals for The Silver Arrow: The Untold Story of Robin Hood or Mamma Mia!

For your work as Assistant Directors at the Citadel, the Intern Director will receive an honorarium of $4500.

For the training period in Banff, there is no remuneration. Intern Directors will be responsible for travel to the Banff Centre for the commencement of the Program. Room and board at the Banff Centre, transportation from Banff to Edmonton, and tuition for all classes and workshops will be paid for by the Citadel Theatre and Banff Centre.

For the rehearsal period at the Citadel Theatre, and for any Intern Director living outside of Edmonton, we will provide an accommodation list for your residency, the cost of which is the responsibility of the Intern Director. Return travel to point-of-origin from Edmonton at the completion of the Program will be paid for by the Citadel Theatre.

The Citadel Theatre is committed to inclusive training and casting. We encourage submissions from professional artists who self-identify as members of under-represented communities. The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program seeks applications from any theatre professionals desiring to enhance their skills, irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, race, or gender identity.
