To foster conversations on editing and publishing Indigenous stories and writers

The Writing Stick: Sharing Indigenous Stories conference takes place June 8 to 10, 2017 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta. It will foster conversations on editing and publishing Indigenous stories and writers.

Who Should Attend? The conference is intended for Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants from all walks of life including publishers, editors, writers, storytellers, filmmakers, academics, translators, artists, librarians, and students. Approximately 200 participants are expected to attend the conference.

What Will Be Accomplished? Through conversation, participants will look for wisdom and insight while exploring principles and guidelines for publishing and editing materials by Indigenous writers and about Indigenous peoples.

How Is the Conference Structured? The conference itself will be an intensive learning experience spread across two days of programming. The program will feature lectures and presentations, workshops, keynote speakers, film screenings, visual displays, and other cultural elements.

What Topics Will Be Discussed? The lectures will address: editing Indigenous works; cultural protocol and respecting of traditional material; appropriate use of terminology, names, and images, issues of appropriation, stereotyping, and proper recognition of Indigenous works.

Registration fees are $100 for early-birds (otherwise $150) and $35 for students. It is possible to register for one day ($75 for Friday or $50 for Saturday). Funding is being sought from all three levels of government (municipal, provincial, and federal) to ensure that the programming is excellent and profound and make the gathering affordable for individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly students.
