YOGI-DANCE: GET FREE WITH CHARLENE

An Afro-Caribbean dance & yoga fusion class. A space where sweat and laughter are encouraged.

BODY IDENTITY with Daša Grgič

A workshop for those with previous dance experience
Monday, February 13 at 11am in the Westbury Theatre
Cost: $15

Our identity is tied to our experiences and how we communicate with the world. This workshop led by renowned Italian dance artist, Daša Grgič, will explore different movement qualities to find a personal and authentic expression through dance. The work will focus on translating the inner perception of the body, and its ability to surprise itself, in a short poetic phrase that reveals the body’s identity.

This workshop will explore what it means to center the black Muslim experience in challenging Islamophobia, and what happens when Muslims fail to take an intersectional approach.

Who tells our Stories: A Panel Discussion with Brnesh Berhe

This panel discussion will focus on addressing what we want and need from the media, what our responsibilities are in telling our stories, and what avenues exist to get those stories out.

Anti-O Workshop with Jasmine Mohamed

This workshop is designed to give awareness to the survival tactics that racialized folks use in white spaces.

Marketing While Black with Jesse Lipscombe
4pm – 4:45pm
This workshop will focus on the business and marketing aspects for following your passion.

Playwright’s Masterclass with Cheryl Foggo
5pm – 6pm
A masterclass led by award-winning Canadian playwright Cheryl Foggo.

THEATRE MAKING WITH MI CASA

A workshop for emerging and experienced theatre artists
Tuesday, February 14 at 3:00pm in the Westbury Theatre

How do you take a story and transform it into a performance that uses all the languages of the theatre? In this workshop you will be introduced to some of Mi Casa’s most loved creation tools. We will prepare you to work collaboratively and turn story points into unexpected images built from poetry, DIY up-cycled material and sound. Participants will explore how play, listening, impulse and failure can transform your process and harness the abilities of everyone in the room.

ROOT DOWN with KARISSA BARRY

A workshop for pre-professional and professional dancers and movement artists
Wednesday, February 15 at 11am in the Westbury Theatre
Cost: $15

Incorporating various techniques, this contemporary class focuses on alignment for health and maintenance, while pushing beyond traditional forms and preparing the working body for creation and performance.  Beginning with floor-work, spine sequencing, and building a solid relationship with the ground, we will move through classical techniques infused with contemporary transitions and intelligent uses of weight transfers and level changes.  Conscious and intricate pathways, directional changes, phrasing and efficiency are predominant themes throughout the class.

THE BODY IN FLIGHT with JANE ALISON McKINNEY

A workshop for pre-professional and professional dancers and movement artists
Wednesday, February 15 at 1pm in the Westbury Theatre

This contemporary dance workshop consists of dynamic floor work, centre work, and the practice of travelling with a sense of flying. Discover the possibilities of artistry and physicality through set combinations as well as improvisational tools and systems. Develop range and learn to fly by making affective choices within given material.

THE FLAMENCO BODY with ROSANNA TERRACCIANO

A workshop for non-flamenco dancers and all levels of skill
Thursday, February 16 at 11am in the Westbury Theatre
Cost: $15

Bring a little heat to winter with this introductory workshop in flamenco movement technique. Learn the foundations of flamenco posture, body alignment, turns, phrases, and foot/body coordination. Rosanna will take you through a variety of exercises in improvisation, exploration, discovery and rhythm, to practice applying flamenco techniques of moving, listening and composing to each unique moving body. Draw the rhythm through your feet, shoot it up through your body, and send it spiralling out of your arms.

FACE & BODY with ELIZABETH MORRIS

A workshop for children, their families, and the young at heart
Saturday, February 18 at 1pm in the Westbury Theatre

Learn to tell a story with your face and body. There’s much more to communication and drama than spoken words or visual language. Join Deaf actress Elizabeth Morris in a hands-on “face and body” drama workshop, especially for children, their families and the young-at-heart.  Through games, you’ll learn how to tell a story using only your face, body and hands! Bring your running shoes and be ready to move around!
