For young Canadian playwrights 30 years of age or under!
The Major Matt Mason Collective in association with Sage Theatre presents The Wildfire National Playwriting Competition!
What is Wildfire? Wildfire is a national playwriting competition for young Canadian playwrights 30 years of age or under. We are looking for playwrights to submit fresh, young scripts that embrace risk, grit and evocation.
The winning script(s) selected by our jury will receive a cash prize and a one week development workshop culminating in a performance as part of the IGNITE! Festival in Calgary, Alberta (as well as full or partial reimbursement for travel).
What kind of workshop?
- We want this workshop to be led by you.
- The playwright has full control over what they want in the workshop and performance.
- Want solid dramaturgical help to solve that one nagging question (you know, the one that keeps you up at night?). We can do that!
- Want to get it on its feet and explore movement or design elements? We can do that!
- Just want to nail down a really solid reading? Let’s do it!
What kind of cash prize? We will be awarding $500 for first place and $250 for the runner-up, as well as full or partial travel reimbursement for the first place playwright to Calgary, AB for the workshop.

Why do this competition? We are a scrappy little company that believes the conversation between young theatre artists is vital in order for fresh, exciting theatre to continue in this country. Over the past two years we have been able to award $2,700 to young playwrights across the country as well as stage four workshop readings of winning plays at Sage Theatre’s IGNITE! Festival.
