Wallace Shawn’s one-man play talks politics and the poor
A theatre company with a focus on solo shows is bringing its first major work to Calgary. Seadreamer is a company that brings power and intent to the forefront of theatre by utilising a single performer. In 2017, their first offering is The Fever, by Wallace Shawn.
Caleb Gordon, the Artistic Director of Seadreamer, wants to make an audience question their perceptions about class and wealth. “We focus so much on the need to personally succeed — whether we’re making money, climbing the corporate ladder or achieving success in our relationships,” Caleb speaks from experience. “And yet, we frequently forget that we share the planet with other people, who don’t have the same basic rights that we assume they do.”
“It’s a difficult play, both intellectually and emotionally,” Caleb admits. “But it’s a conversation that needs to be had, especially in Calgary’s current economic downturn.”
The Fever is a play first produced in 1990, but still highly relevant today, and produced all over Canada and the United States. The playwright, Wallace Shawn, is well known for his portrayal of Vizzini in The Princess Bride, and as himself in My Dinner with Andre. Shawn is also an accomplished playwright, producing several plays that have both shocked and pleased playgoers for several decades.
LOCATION: The show will be presented at The Motel Theatre at Arts Commons (formerly the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts) in downtown Calgary, opposite Olympic Plaza at 225 8th Avenue SE. Performances will run from February 16 to 25. Mild profanity is present, therefore viewer discretion is advised.
