Announcement (National): Stage West to Sponsor 2017 Awards – Playwrights Guild of Canada

Playwrights Guild of CanadaPlaywrights Guild of Canada Announces Stage West’s $10,000 Sponsorship for 2017

Playwrights Guild of Canada (PGC) is pleased to announce that Stage West Theatre Restaurants have confirmed their sponsorship for the Stage West Pechet Family Comedy and Stage West Pechet family Musical Awards for 2017.

Thanks to the ongoing support of the Pechet family, PGC has been able to recognize new Canadian Comedies and Musicals during its Tom Hendry Awards. Come From Away by Irene Sankoff and David Hein (2013 Musical Award winners) is now a Broadway bound musical and will be produced this month in Toronto by Mirvish productions. Onegin by Amiel Gladstone and Veda Hille (2014 Musical Award winners) swept last year’s Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, winning 10 awards.

“Writing musicals can be a very long process, a mix of high inspiration and very low, very slow going tedium. The Stage West Pechet Family Musical Award came just when Veda and I needed it – encouragement to keep going, and real financial support so we could carve out the time we needed. The award was a huge factor in the success of the ‘Onegin’ premiere.” – Amiel Gladstone, 2014 recipient of the Stage West Musical Award.

The Stage West Pechet Family Comedy Award is given annually for a new comedy by a PGC-member, which has not yet had a premiere production. This award is worth $5000. Past recipients of this award include Lorne Elliott, Michael Grant, Douglas E. Hughes & Marcia Kash, Lucas Foss, and Kristen Da Silva. Submissions will open in January 2017.
