What’s On (Edmonton): “Hansel and Gretel” – Alberta Opera & Fringe Theatre Adventures

Hansel and Gretel, Alberta Opera & Fringe Theatre AdventuresProduction revived in touching tribute to late composer

Audiences are invited to return to the Black Forest with Farren Timoteo and Jeff Unger’s adaptation of Hansel and Gretel as part of Fringe Theatre Adventures 2016/17 Season.

Hansel and Gretel is the timeless tale of a brother and sister following the rumble of their empty stomachs through an eerie forest to a house made of entirely of sweets, only to discover that something sinister lurks within. Using their wits and every ounce of courage they have, Hansel and Gretel must work together to find their way back.

The revival follows Jeff Unger’s passing in the summer of 2015. Timoteo felt that reviving “one of Jeff’s favourite shows” would be a fitting tribute to the late composer and lyricist, who shared the role of co-Artistic Director with Timoteo until his death.

Timoteo will direct the 2016 production of Hansel and Gretel with Erik Mortimer as music director, and Leah Paterson as choreographer. The cast features Jessica Andrews (Gretel/Ensemble), Jaclyn Keppler (Hansel/Ensemble), Adam Houston (Father/Ensemble), and Stephanie Urquhart (piano). Deanna Finnman’s original costumes will return, alongside a new set and lighting design by Stephanie Bahniuk.

Hansel and Gretel runs October 14, 15 and 16 in the newly minted Backstage Theatre at ATB Financial Arts Barns as part of Fringe Theatre Adventures 2016/17 season. Tickets now on sale!
