Workshops (Edmonton): Performing Arts Classes – Grindstone Theatre

If you have taken a class with us before than you know to expect fun and engaging classes with professional instructors ready to help you grow!

Grindstone Theatre will be offering the following classes this fall:

Fundamentals of Acting: This class will cover acting technique for the stage and screen. If you are looking to pursue a career in the theatre or are just looking to pursue acting as a hobby then this is a great class for you. Through warm ups, text analysis, monologue work, and scene work this class will help you to increase your skills and knowledge to take your acting to the next level.

No experience necessary.

  • Showcase Performance: 7:30pm at the Basement Theatre (10037 84 Ave), December 10, 2016.
  • Performance is encouraged but not mandatory.
  • Saturdays: 11-1pm.
  • 8 classes + Showcase.
  • October 1 to December 10 (No classes Oct 8, 29, and Nov 19).

Stand-Up Comedy: You know you’ve always wanted to be a comedian, so do it already! This class is going to help you create your first stand up set, or if you’ve already got some material, then it is going to help you refine it into comedy gold! You can expect writing exercises, exercises in breaking down the science of comedy as well as performing tips and performance experience in a creative and supportive environment. This class is gonna be a good time, so sign up and get your funny on!

No experience required.

  • 18+
  • Showcase Performance: 7:30pm at the Basement Theatre (10037 84 Ave), December 10, 2016.
  • Performance is encouraged but not mandatory.
  • Tuesdays: 7-9pm.
  • 8 classes + Showcase.
  • October 4 to December 3 (No classes Oct 25, and Nov 29).

Improv Level 1: Say YES, AND…take improv level 1. This class is great for learning the basics of improvisation. It will cover how to setup scenes, get suggestions, tell a story, create a character and make strong offers in an improvised scene. Using warm up exercises and short form games, improv level 1 will get you on your feet, making it up on the spot.

No experience necessary.

  • Showcase Performance: 7:30pm at the Basement Theatre (10037 84 Ave), December 10, 2016.
  • Performance is encouraged but not mandatory.
  • Saturdays: 11-1pm
  • 8 classes + Workshop.
  • October 1 to December 3 (No Classes Oct 29, and Nov 19).

Introduction to Long-Form Improv: Long form improv can take on many forms, styles and genres which will be explored in this class. Building on basic improv skills students will work on narrative based long form improv as well as an array of exercises and tools that will take your improv to the next level!

Previous improv experience required.

  • Saturdays: 1:30-3:30pm
  • 8 Classes + Showcase.
  • October 1 – December 10 (No classes Oct 29, Nov 19, and 26).

Musical Theatre (Ages 11-17): Dream of being a Broadway star one day?! Our musical theatre class will teach you the fundamentals on how to combine songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance into an unforgettable theatrical performance.

No previous experience necessary!

  • Sunday: 1-3pm.
  • Showcase Performance: 7:30pm at the Basement Theatre (10037 84 Ave), December 10, 2016.
  • Performance is encouraged but not mandatory.
  • 8 classes + Showcase
  • October 2 to December 4 (No classes Oct 23, and 30).

Musical Improv: This class is all about making up songs on the spot to create improvised musical comedy. We explore song structure, melody, rhythm, song styles and the different techniques used to make up unforgettable songs. You can expect to be up on your feet working as a group and even creating solo songs. The class will cover different musical theatre styles, going from scene work into songs and much more!

Must have completed Improv Level 1 or have prior improv experience. (Please note that this class is not for musicians but for actors/singers/improvisors)

  • Sundays 3-5pm.
  • Showcase Performance: 7:30pm at the Basement Theatre (10037 84 Ave), December 10, 2016.
  • Performance is encouraged but not mandatory.
  • 8 classes + Showcase.
  • October 2 to December 4 (No classes Oct 23, and 30).
