What’s On (Edmonton): “Drinking in America” (Edmonton Fringe) – Grindstone Theatre

Drinking in America, Grindstone TheatreThe New York Times calls Drinking in America “a breakneck, hair-raising tour,”

and Grindstone Theatre is bringing it to Edmonton!

Edmonton’s Grindstone Theatre, hot off of several sold-out performances of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), returns with emerging director Brooklyn Ritchie this summer to the Edmonton International Fringe Festival with Drinking in America.  The craving to be special is at the forefront of this satire of the land of the free and home of the brave.

Drinking in America debuted Off-Broadway in 1986 to critical acclaim.  During its initial run, it won an Obie and a Drama Desk Award for Playwriting and Solo Performance, respectively.  In an act of chameleon-like flair Neil Kuefler will transform into a whole gallery of addicts, all reaching for their own version of the America Dream.  The characters run the social gamut, from a drunken bum in a gutter, to a burnt-out workaholic, to a coked-out Hollywood producer – their sense of entitlement unites them.

Drinking in America is a part of the 2016 Edmonton International Fringe Festival and takes the stage August 11 – 21, 2016.  The performance venue is The Backstage Theatre: Venue #2 (in the Arts Barn).  Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance on the Fringe website: www.fringetheatre.ca
