Message from the Minister of Culture and Tourism

As the Minister responsible for Culture and Tourism, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Theatre Alberta’s Artstrek 2016.

For more than 50 years, Artstrek has been welcoming teens passionate about theatre to learn from exceptional professionals and educators. Whether your passion takes you backstage or into the spotlight, Artstrek is a wonderful opportunity to hone your craft and explore your creative potential.

Alberta has an exceptional arts community and I hope Artstrek inspires you to make theatre an important part of your life, be it as a professional or as an enthusiast.

I want to commend Theatre Alberta and the staff, instructors and volunteers who are working so hard behind the scenes to produce another successful Artstrek. My thanks also to everyone associated with Red Deer College for hosting Artstrek and making this event possible once again.

To our future theatre talent, who will be studying the musical “In the Heights,” best wishes for continued success in the years ahead!

Message from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts

On behalf of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA), I am pleased to welcome you to Artstrek 2016: In The Heights. The AFA is proud to support Theatre Alberta’s annual summer tradition for young Albertans with a passion for theatre.

For hundreds of teenage students, Artstrek is a wonderful opportunity to participate in theatre while learning from talented professional artists and educators who live and work in our province. This generational sharing of skills, knowledge and passion—from instructors to supervisors to students—is the heart and soul of Artstrek.

After your week-long sojourn at Artstrek, you will return to your own community with new skills and wonderful memories. Perhaps more importantly, will be the lasting friendships that you will have made with like-minded, creative young people from across the province – the next generation of Alberta’s arts community.

And when you return, we hope you will continue to inspire, discover and celebrate the art in your life, every day.

Message from Red Deer College

Through our partnership with Theatre Alberta and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Red Deer College is proud to play host to Artstrek 2016.

Red Deer College provides an environment that allows students to explore, enjoy and learn about the arts. As a provincial leader in Creative Arts education, we acknowledge the importance of arts within society and are committed to providing hands-on learning opportunities for students. By welcoming the Artstrek program onto our campus for the past 20 years, we are proud to provide today’s youth with access to professional facilities and faculty needed to explore their passion.

Through the School of Creative Arts, Red Deer College has positioned itself to ensure the continued development of arts in Alberta. We continue to make opportunities for young artists a priority. As well, our ongoing development of new degree offerings will expand our current capacity to offer post-secondary credentials in the areas of Theatre, Film, and Entertainment arts.

On behalf of all us at Red Deer College I look forward to welcoming the 2016 Artstrek students onto our campus and continuing our contribution to this exciting and successful programming.
