Call for Submissions (National): Reframing the Stage – ADHOC Assembly & LMDA

Adhoc AssemblyRequesting Proposals for new identity-conscious / non-traditionally cast productions of Canadian work!

We invite the community at large to join us in imagining future stagings of Canadian Work that incorporate identity alongside the other contextual considerations which factor into our varied interpretive practices.

Proposals should offer reasoning for the approach to the proposed production, and articulate the interpretive impact of this choice on the story being presented to audiences.

OVERVIEW: ADHOC Assembly and Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA) Canada launch a forward-looking inquiry into best practises for identity-conscious casting. A diametric alternative to colour blind casting, identity conscious productions incorporate the identities of cast and creative team members as an acknowledged and incorporated narrative element. This approach considers the implications of age, race, gender, physical ability, etc. within the story being told. (A play is herein defined as a performative source document).

OBJECTIVE: Solicit thinking around staging choices that better reflect our collective lived realities.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS for identity-conscious / non-traditionally cast productions of Canadian work. We invite the community at large to join us in imagining future stagings of Canadian work that incorporate identity alongside the other contextual considerations which factor into our varied interpretive practises. Artists are invited to submit proposals that situate a Canadian work within a specific context (e.g. historical, regional, linguistic, gender or cultural relocation). Proposals should offer reasoning for the approach to the proposed production, and articulate the interpretive impact of this choice on the story being presented to audiences. Give consideration, if appropriate, to:

  • How the text supports your interpretation,
  • Implications of the framing conceit,
  • Impact on cast/creative team,
  • Context as commentary,
  • Form, discipline, performative tradition, symbology, cosmology,
  • Consistency with / deviation from work’s conventional intention.

While this project is dramaturgically driven, submissions are welcome from all arts practitioners regardless of training, discipline, culture, ethnicity, ability, experience, affiliation or role. Collaboratively devised proposals are welcome.
