Call for Submissions (Edmonton): Borderlines Writers Circle – Writers’ Guild of Alberta

Writers' Guild of Alberta2016 Borderlines Writers Circle Now Open for Applications

The Writers’ Guild of Alberta is seeking applications by culturally-diverse writers for its 2016 Borderlines Writers Circle.

The Borderlines Writers Circle exists to provide individual authors who may face cultural, linguistic, and other barriers to participating in Edmonton’s writing community, with opportunities to be introduced to the local literary scene. Selected candidates will work in a small group environment on custom-designed activities aimed at advancing their writing career and increasing their connection with the local community. The writers will be given the opportunity to participate in podcasts, receive one-on-one support, and will be featured in at least one public literary event.

The program will run from September, 2016 through March, 2017. Participation in the Borderlines Writers Circle is free of charge. This is made possible through the generous support of Edmonton Arts Council, Edmonton Community Foundation and Alberta Association for Multicultural Education.

To qualify for this project, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  1. The writer has a portfolio of work in their dominant language.
  2. The writer comes from a culturally-diverse background and is not yet established in Canada’s mainstream literary scene. This includes immigrant writers and Canadian-born Indigenous writers interested in working in English, or a combination of English and their heritage language.
  3. The writer has a working knowledge of English.
  4. The writer is a Canadian citizen, refugee or landed immigrant, living in or around Edmonton.
  5. The writer is available to attend evening readings/activities on a regular basis (average two per month), and to present/perform at events.

Applications must be received by June 30, 2016. (Please note this is not a postmark deadline.) Interviews will take place in early July.

Interested writers should send a completed copy of the application form by email to julie.robinson@writersguild.ca or by post to
