Position: Costuming Assistant (Information & Creative Technical Services 1).
Duration: Temporary part-time wage position July 25, 2016 – January 20, 2017.
Hours: Three days per week (21.75 hours per week) (possibility of extension).
Wage: $23.61 / hour.
Closing Date: June 27, 2016.

The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is currently recruiting for the temporary wage position of Costuming Assistant to work three days per week between July 25, 2016 and January 20, 2017, with the possibility of extension.

The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (UCHV) is a provincially operated outdoor living history museum that presents the history of east central Alberta from a predominantly Ukrainian perspective. More than 35 historic buildings from the surrounding community have been relocated to the site presenting the period of 1892 – 1930. Costumed role players portray real people who once lived in the region, allowing visitors to travel back in time to learn about the area’s history, people and culture.

Reporting to the Curator, the Costume Assistant will issue costumes to interpreters and to participants in the weekly children’s programs; launder costumes; repair or alter clothing using appropriate sewing techniques; maintain an inventory of clothing items that are worn by costumed role-players at the historic site; and provide information to interpreters regarding the proper fit and historically correct appearance of reproduction clothing. Working closely with the Costume Coordinator, the Costuming Assistant will also sew reproduction clothing, using historically correct sewing methods.

The successful candidate will have experience altering, mending and laundering clothing and will have demonstrated quality sewing skills as well as good organization and communication abilities.

Qualifications:

  • Tailoring or dressmaking certificate or equivalent,
  • Experience sewing, mending and altering costumes,
  • An understanding of the requirements for garment storage and inventory,
  • Good organization and communication skills,
  • Knowledge of fabrics and fabric care,
  • Computer experience is an asset,
  • Knowledge of historic costumes is an asset.

The primary work location will be at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (located 55 km east of Edmonton along Hwy. 16). Occasional work at other locations, including Edmonton, will also be required.

Note: The successful candidate will be required to submit a current driver’s abstract and security screening.
