Theatre Production Manager – 9 Month Term Position
The Department of Drama, University of Alberta seeks an experienced Theatre Production Manager. This is a senior position in the department, with an interesting and diverse set of responsibilities. The Production Manager oversees all production activity and facilities and supervises a team of experienced theatre crafts persons and technical support as well as students learning in an apprenticeship-style manner within production situations. The department produces a main stage season (Studio Theatre) of 5 productions in Timms Centre for Arts, an outstanding theatre facility which also has a state of the art black box theatre, first class shops and rehearsal hall. Another 20 small scale productions are produced in theatres and studios in the Timms and the adjoining Fine Arts Building.
The Department of Drama has an outstanding reputation, with emphasis on specialist training for those seeking a professional theatre career. The successful candidate will interact with students from all programs. Bachelor of Fine Arts programs include degrees in: Technical Production, Stage Management, Design, and Acting. The Department also offers a BA Drama Major program which links theatre practice and theory. Master of Fine Arts programs are offered in Design, Directing, Voice Pedagogy and a flexible MFA in Theatre Practice attracts experienced theatre artists seeking to upgrade and enrich their skills in any area of theatre practice. The position’s areas of responsibility include:
- Production Management,
- Overseeing students in technical theatre practicums and crews,
- Supervision of production staff,
- Facility management,
- Developing and maintaining production and technical budgets.
The successful candidate will demonstrate concrete examples of working effectively and collaboratively in team situations and high interest in the artistic and educational missions of the department. The position works closely with the department’s Chair and Assistant Chair (Administration), and plays a key role in department planning and management.
Qualifications: The successful applicant must have substantial experience as a Production Manager in a mid or large scale professional and/or academic theatre, or related skills and experience. S/he will have proven capacities to manage production budgets, lead production staff and oversee theatrical productions. Experience or interest in working with students as well as professional staff is essential. A related university degree is desirable but equivalencies in professional and educational theatre production may substitute for this qualification.
Position: This is a 9 month term position from September 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017. The position is ranked as Administrative and Professional Officer (APO), and enjoys an excellent benefit package (under Sessional and Other Temporary Staff Agreement found here: www.hrs.ualberta.ca/Benefits.aspx). The salary is negotiable, based on previous experience; the range for this position is $66,336 – $110,147 per annum.
