Making Treaty 7Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society seeks Artistic Director!

The Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society (MT7) was founded in March 2013 with the mandate to promote a greater understanding of the history, contemporary relevance and cultural significance of Treaty 7 to all people of Southern Alberta and beyond. MT7 has created a major theatrical and cultural work that explores the historical significance, and contemporary relevance of Treaty 7, the founding event of modern Southern Alberta. It premiered in 2014 and expanded its reach and audience in 2015. The strategic plan now envisions further performances, workshops and seminars, touring and meeting its educational mandate.

MT7 seeks an Artistic Director to carry on the artistic vision of the Society as it continues to evolve and will be responsible for the duties and accountabilities detailed below. The Artistic Director, working with Executive Director, the Board, Staff, Consultants and the community will continue to establish MT7 as a permanent entity with achievable long-term goals and vision. The position requires a deep commitment to MT7’s artistic and educational goals, as well as a strong sense of responsibility and an excellent work ethic.

Duration: As required, year-round
Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience.

PRIMARY FOCUS: The Artistic Director is responsible for the articulation and production of overall vision of the Making Treaty 7 project. The Artistic Director oversees artistic development, creation, planning and programming, in collaboration with the Administrative Manager, the MT7 board of directors and the Treaty 7 community, to ensure the sustainability, vitality, excellence and profile of the Making Treaty 7 project.

ACCOUNTABILITIES: Responsibilities include artistic research and programming, audience development, MT7 board participation, and overall ambassadorship. As a member of the management team, the Artistic Director will contribute to the overall strategic planning of the organization and will further the goals and objectives of the organization. The Artistic Director is a collaborative partner to the Executive Director. The Artistic Director directly supervises the creative development and performance team, and is a member of the Management Team. The Artistic Director reports directly to the Board of Directors. The preferred candidate will possesses an understanding of Treaty 7 Nations or Plains Indian knowledge.

RESPONSIBILITIES: This permanent position includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

  • DEVELOPMENT: The Artistic Director articulates and demonstrates a philosophical and practical artistic mandate for the Making Treaty 7 project, subject to Board approval, and programs the MT7 annual production and touring options according to the philosophy agreed upon through strategic planning.
  • The Artistic Director is involved in administrative and fundraising activities, in collaboration with the Executive Director, subject to Board approval.
  • PRODUCTION: Collaborate and coordinate with the Treaty 7 community, the Administrative Manager, the Board of Directors and the project’s many community, government, educational and corporate partners, to plan and execute the Making Treaty 7 project.

This is a part-time role, with the potential to become full-time.
The Administrative Manager is responsible to the Artistic Director.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
