SHAKESPEARE WORKSHOPS ALBERTA presents
CLASSICAL ACTING INTENSIVE- (CALGARY)
March 5th & 6th , 2016
JULIUS CAESAR
Shakespeare Workshops Alberta offers courses in classical performance run in association with Shoreditch’s (London, UK) resident 5-star Shakespeare Company, Malachite Theatre. Based on contemporary Elizabethan performance methodologies, our intensive short courses will set you on a new path with classical text, speaking Shakespeare with confidence and helping you stand out in this competitive industry.
Our sessions are open to actors of all ages and skill levels wishing to improve or refresh their approach to Shakespeare. This month we are offering a 2 day intensive weekend course on March 5th & 6th with a focus on Julius Caesar as we approach the Ides of March!
DAY 1- March 5th -Intro to Shakespeare & Verse through Music (8 contact hours)
Through the morning, take a crash course in contemporary and contextual approaches to Shakespeare designed to improve your verse reading, refresh your approaches to text and hone your audition technique. Use Elizabethan Original Practice methods to work with Shakespeare’s texts the way the Chamberlain’s Men did in the playhouses of London and beyond.
In the second half of the day, explore how the Musicality of Shakespeare can develop your skills for easy, natural verse delivery. Discover how musical methods and tools can help you find freedom and connection through verse and learn more about Shakespeare’s relationship with music both in his texts and on the Elizabethan Stage.
DAY 2- March 6th – Focus on Julius Caesar (8 hrs)
A hands-on course where participants apply their new classical acting skills in practice. Participants will learn to ‘listen to Shakespeare’, working on text from the ‘bottom-up’ to develop a truthful, connected performance.
We will work monologues, duologues and scene studies from Julius Caesar, as well as other material brought by participants. This is a great opportunity to develop your rehearsal process, add pieces to your personal audition repertoire, explore Shakespeare’s Rome –a complex society he would return to time and again- and challenge yourself with this intense political drama.
