Seeking Assistant Production Crew in All Departments!
The Canadian Badlands Passion Play is currently accepting applications for Assistant Production Crew in all departments for the spring and summer of 2016. The Passion Play is a unique working environment as we are a professionally supported community theatre company on a filmic scale. Our stage is over a kilometer from SL to SR and rises in elevation more than 100′. The cast is approximately 200 performers, depending on the year, and 95% are volunteers. The rehearsals and performances happen outdoors on our stage in all kinds of spring and summer weather with as much tech as possible from day one.
Job Descriptions:
Assistant Carpenters will:
- Assist in construction, repair, maintenance and instillation of all set elements as described in the script, assigned by the Set/Props Designer and those written into the rehearsal notes by Stage Management.
- Assist with the practical interpretation of drawings and designs produced for the production in order to Build and Install in stage.
- Be aware of the requirements for the health and safety legislation and procedures relevant to their role and be responsible for expressing any safety concerns that are observed and assisting to rectify them.
- Be part of the Running Crew where they may be responsible for the Pre-setting, show setting, striking, operation of, and ‘On the Fly’ fixes or repairs to specific Stage, Set, props and FX pieces during the run of the show.
Assistant Props will:
- Assist in construction, repair, maintenance and instillation of all set elements as described in the script, assigned by the Set/props Designer and those written into the rehearsal notes by Stage Management.
- Interpret drawings and designs produced in order to build prop elements for use by performers and Directors during rehearsals and full production.
- Assist to Source and purchase prop elements that cannot, or should not, be built for the production in house.
- They must be aware of the requirements of the health and safety legislation and procedures relevant to their role and be responsible for expressing any safety concerns that are observed and assisting to rectify them.
- Be part of the Running Crew where they may be responsible for the Pre-setting, show setting, striking, operation of, and ‘On the Fly’ fixes or repairs to specific Stage, Set, props and FX pieces during the run of the show.
Assistant Wardrobe will:
- Will be working in the wardrobe department as a cutter, stitcher and dresser as required. hand-sewing, millinery,
- Dying and painting and craftwork as required.
- Cobbling as required. (Often responsible for shoe repairs which includes sewing and gluing)
- Costume assembly from general stock for BG Actors, under the direction of the Head of Wardrobe and Costume Designer.
- Costume Maintenance, Costume pulling, Laundering and prep for storage as required.
- Alterations and repairs on stock costumes as required.
- Being a Show Dresser during the production. Includes; Pre-setting costumes before each show, Assisting quick changes for actors as needed, Assist with show laundry each night as required.
Sound Assistant will:
- Be responsible for moving gear around, hooking up speakers, running lines to speakers, hiding speakers, running tests on equipment, cleaning equipment, and maintaining upwards of 24 wireless mics to help setup the sound system before rehearsals begin.
- Be responsible for making sure all actors have their appropriate mics at the appropriate time.
- They will need to ascertain issues with costumes and specific actors in relation to mic placement and retention.
- When available the Sound Assistant will be called on to listen from the audience to help with setting levels and locations of mics.
- They are also responsible for creating a mic map that shows when actors have mics relative to the script and keep it updated as changes occur.
These are contract positions. They may have a small amount of preliminary satellite hours starting in early March through April but will be full time (5 day weeks), on site in Drumheller, AB, from early May through late July. The Passion Play is not preferential to either Union or Non-Union professionals. We can never be a CTA theatre company but we have hired Equity professionals under Guest Artist Policies Contracts in the past.
The Canadian Badlands Passion Play is one of Canada’s largest outdoor theatrical events. A not for profit, charitable organization in its 23rd season, the company annually depicts the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ in dramatic form. With mixed cast of roughly 200 volunteer and professional performers, live animals and permanent middle eastern set structures on a massive outdoor stage, The Passion Play is an epic story told on an epic scale.
