Description: When she was a young girl, Mavis left home to go to work in St. John’s. Like most people in the Outports around Bonavista Bay, Mavis Chaulk was hard workin’ yet “poor off”. But she didn’t know it. There was no such thing as poverty in her world. Because everybody took care of everybody else. That was their way. And it was the sea that made them who they were. Some sailors even believed that she needed to be fed and prayed that they wouldn’t be her next meal.
