ARTSTREK: A SUMMER THEATRE SCHOOL FOR TEENS
CELEBRATES 55th ANNIVERSARY
Theatre Alberta welcomes more than 300 teens to Red Deer College in July
Theatre Alberta’s Artstrek is a summer school for teens that explores the exciting world of theatre and stagecraft. Every summer, we welcome more than 300 teens from across Alberta to Red Deer College to study for a week in residence with professional theatre artists and educators. The program was first established in 1960; in 2015 we celebrate Artstrek’s 55th anniversary.
Theatre Alberta selects a different play of study each year and employs a new team of theatre professionals to develop a curriculum centred on that script. For the summer of 2015, we will study one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies: A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Featuring the misadventures of young lovers, spiteful sprites, and mirthful magic spells, this perennial summer favourite abounds with thrilling challenges for young thespians.
In 2015, we also celebrate Artstrek’s special relationship with Cenovus Energy, which has supported the expansion of the program from two to three weeks. In 2013, Cenovus Energy donated $75,000, allocated over a three-year period, to help Theatre Alberta increase Artstrek’s student capacity by 30% and eliminate waiting lists. With more than 300 students already registered and four weeks remaining to apply, this summer’s program could be the biggest Artstrek and #bestmidsummernightever!
