Larger Than Life: 2015-2016 Season:

Lakmé
Die Tote Stadt
The Magic Flute
Opera in the Village
Christmas at the Opera

The centerpiece of this year’s Opera in the Village is Gilbert & Sullivan’s comedic opera, The Mikado. There will also be family friendly matinee performances of The Scorpions’ Sting. Both will be performed in our 900-seat open-air tent. The festival takes place August 13-22 in Calgary’s East Village RiverWalk™ Plaza.

We open the season with Lakmé by Leo Delibes, November 21, 25 & 27. Lakmé is the story of a Hindu Priestess who defies her father’s wishes to be with the handsome British officer she’s fallen deeply in love with.

Following Lakmé is the Canadian Premiere of Die Tote Stadt – The Dead City by Erich Korngold, January 30 & February 3 & 5. Calgary Opera welcomes back Bramwell Tovey as Conductor. Bramwell is a gifted Conductor and Musical Director, a published composer and a Juno and Grammy award winner. The production follows a man’s fight for his sanity as he’s tormented by desire of a seductress who bears striking resemblance to his ghostly love.

The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, playing April 16, 20 & 22, is the final mainstage production for the 2015-2016 season. It’s an eternal audience favourite in which a queen entices a young prince in order to free her daughter from the clutches of her nemesis.
