In honour of the Citadel’s 50th Anniversary Season (2015/16) and in celebration of the extraordinarily talented Edmonton arts community, the Citadel is pleased to announce MADE-IN-EDMONTON Cabaret Premieres. The Citadel Theatre has commissioned six original cabaret projects, created by Edmonton artists, to be performed in the The Club at the Citadel, one of Canada’s most exquisite cabaret venues.
“For 50 years the Citadel has been committed to developing artists and audiences,” says Bob Baker, Artistic Director. “The Made-In-Edmonton Cabaret Premieres showcase some of Edmonton’s hottest artistic talent. These premieres aim to help local artists present new work, and obtain professional mentorship, as well as foster the growth of a strong arts scene in Edmonton for the next 50 years”.
Next season we celebrate a major reason why Edmonton is a world class city – its extraordinary local talent.
SHOW DATES & DESCRIPTIONS:
Don Berner – The Don Berner Big Band Variety Show
September 2015
The Don Berner Big Band Variety Show is a mix of some of the best and most classic trappings of cabarets and variety shows meeting modern sensibilities with an Edmonton twist. The music of everyone from Glen Miller and Benny Goodman to Beyonce and Journey performed by some of Edmonton’s finest musicians, combined with Ben Sures, comedian Donovan Workun, and the Miss Behavin’ Burlesque girls plus surprise guests will stir the hearts, minds, and loins of all proud Edmontonians and ensure a toe-tapping, dance-inducing evening never to be forgotten!
Rapid Fire Theatre – WE’RE NOT AFRAID! An Improvised Homage to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
January 2016
Rapid Fire Theatre, Edmonton’s longest-running improv company, presents We’re Not Afraid! An Improvised Homage to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Inspired and supported by the Citadel Theatre’s production of the play, this comedic send up will combine the structure and relationships of Edward Albee’s masterpiece, with the spontaneity and absurdity of a completely improvised play . It will be a new show each night, but we guarantee a hilarious dose of booze, delusion, and misery.
Krystle Dos Santos – BLACK
February 2016
BLACK is the new Black. This diverse cabaret style show will contemplate what it is to be a person of colour in Canada today. Expressed through poetry, dance and song, Black will explore the many cultures, personalities and experiences of the people that make up the “black” population in Western Canada – their struggles, their stereotypes and their stories told from the perspective of six very distinct characters.
Send In The Girls – Bust’em up Burlesque
March 2016
They were organized, they were cunning, they were ruthless and they looked great in a pair of silk stockings. From Edmonton’s Send in the Girls Burlesque, the theatre company that created the sold out, held over, awarding winning “Tudor Queens: A Burlesque,” “A Brontë Burlesque” and “The Hollywoodland Burlesques” comes the little-known story of the Forty Elephants, a girl-gang of jazz follies in 1920’s London who looked like heaven but raised hell. It’s true crime meets striptease with some bad ass flapper feminism thrown in for good measure.
Joel Crichton – Death: LIVE!
April 2016
The Angel of Death hosts a musical cabaret in which he presents to you his top ten favourite deaths of all time…in musical form. Aided by his acrobatic troupe of deceased actors, the stories are dark, shocking, hilarious, touching, and constantly surprising.
Death: LIVE! is about life and its impermanence, but ultimately the human aspect of the journey reveals itself through Death’s relationship with his friends and the audience. Rather than doom and hopelessness, we’re left with a statement of reality, and making the most of the time one has—as one never knows when it will end.
Catch The Keys – The Runcible Riddle
May 2016
