CALGARY (Hearts) THE ROXY
A Calgary Theatre Community Fundraiser in Support of Theatre Network
and The Roxy Theatre
Calgary, AB – On the evening on Saturday, February 21, The Pumphouse Theatre is pleased to host an evening in support of Edmonton’s Theatre Network and their efforts to rebuild the Roxy Theatre.
In the early morning of January 13th, a staple of the Edmonton performing arts community, The Roxy Theatre, was burnt to the ground in a horrible fire. Theatre Network’s technical & artistic resources were lost, in addition to their much beloved historic building. The loss of the theatre is a tremendous blow to the city of Edmonton and the thousands of Albertans (artists and audience alike) who had accessed the theatre each year.
Looking to assist in the recovery effort from afar, The Pumphouse Theatre, and members of the Calgary theatre community, are excited to host a staged reading of Chris Craddock’s brilliant adaptation of SUMMER OF MY AMAZING LUCK by Miriam Toews. Admission to the reading will be a pay-what-you-can donation ($20 suggested). All donations received after admissions will be matched by The Pumphouse Theatre, up to $500. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to Edmonton’s Theatre Network, and their efforts to rebuild The Roxy Theatre.
Meet Lucy, a down-on-her luck single mother, trapped in Canada’s welfare system. Leaving behind the mosquito-infested torrential rain of Winnipeg, Lucy and her best friend Lish decide to escape the craziness by setting out in a van held together with coat hangers and electrical tape. Cramped to the hilt with kids and toys, the journey takes them on down-and-out adventure filled with wonder.
SUMMER OF MY AMAZING LUCK received its world premiere at Theatre Network in 2004, as well as a Calgary production by Sage Theatre in 2011.
The staged reading will be performed by Karen Johnson Diamond, Duval Lang, Paul Welch, Amber Bissonnette, Myla Southward, & Cam Ascroft
