About the Play: A new play based on the novel Cockroach by Rawi Hage. An immigrant man from an unnamed Middle Eastern country hustles to survive in icy-cold Montreal. He’s a liar and a thief with a haunted past and a cynical view of the world. He’s got problems: sometimes he thinks he’s a cockroach. He needs to escape the dark corners of his life, get beyond survival and start to thrive. So when he meets the man who hurt the love of his life, he can’t help himself. He starts to plot revenge.
Casting Notes: Cockroach is a three-hander, ensemble production. We are seeking two strong female actors to portray the characters described below as well as additional characters as cast.
Roles:
Genevieve: Female. 38. Lives in Montreal. She is the Narrator’s psychiatrist as supplied by the province in response to his attempted suicide. She is intelligent, quick-witted and represents the part of society that wants to help immigrants/refugees like the Narrator integrate into Canada. Compassionate and articulate, she plays by the rules.
Shoreh / Souad: Cross-cast. Both characters are Female, mid-20’s. An immigrant from Iran, Shoreh was imprisoned after the Revolution and tortured. She lives in Montreal, is fiercely independent, wickedly smart, vibrant and sexy, but with a dark past. Souad is The Narrator’s sister. She lived and died in Beirut. She marries Tony, a militiaman in Lebanon during the civil war, and has his child. A sweet, caring woman, she is abused by Tony. When her brother offers her protection she denies his request. She is ultimately killed in a horrible act of domestic violence.
