What’s On (Edmonton): The Antyssey – Concrete Theatre

AntysseyPosterConcrete Theatre presents the World Premiere of a brand new musical The Antyssey, book, music and lyrics by Joel Crichton and Richard Lee at the Westbury Theatre on January 22, 23 and 24, 2015 for six public performances kicking off a tour to Elementary schools in Edmonton and surrounding areas.

The Antyssey follows Oscar, a young ant, who has been brought up with one goal: to dedicate his life to his black ant colony. When he discovers the truth about his parentage… that he is actually a yellow ant, questions about his identity send him away from his beloved colony on a journey of self-discovery… An Antyssey! Joined unexpectedly by Andrea, his feisty and combative classmate, who is fighting the expectations of the colony that she become a Queen, the two find themselves in parts of the forest they have only heard about… and face to face with insects they never knew existed, including the mysterious and wise Tiresias Caterpillar. A song-filled look at identity and expectation that celebrates the uniqueness of every individual… revealing lots of amazing facts about ants along the way!

The Antyssey is written by Edmonton playwrights and performers Joel Crichton and Richard Lee and is directed by Mieko Ouchi. It features an outstanding cast of Nadien Chu, Oscar Derkx and Jesse Gervais, in a production designed by Patrick Beagan with music direction by Joel Crichton. Sang Sang Lee is stage managing, fresh off A Christmas Carol at the Citadel.
