AUDITION NOTICE
Downstage is looking for young male actors to audition for the character of Sunny in the Western Canadian Premiere of rihannaboi95 by Jordan Tannahill, a unique solo show that is performed live and streamed online for audiences.
ABOUT THE SHOW
“By the time I upload this, by the time you see this, not sure where I’ll be.
Hopefully things won’t be any worse than they are now.”
Sunny needs to talk about what’s happening, but he has to do it where no one will find him. Because Sunny, aka rihannaboi95, made some videos and while yeah, they’re getting lots of hits, some people at school found them too and now the eggshell world he so carefully treads is threatening to collapse beneath him. Cloistered within the bedroom of his friend Keira, Sunny records a video for his loyal viewers, invoking his YouTube namesake when he needs her most.
Dealing candidly with bullying, queer identity, and the pain of self-invention, Jordan Tannahill’s rihannaboi95 invites viewers to watch a live performance from the privacy of their own computers.
THIS OPPORTUNITY MIGHT BE FOR YOU IF…
– You are male
– You can believably look 16
– You are a cultural visible minority (the character is from a conservative immigrant family; the text will be adapted to fit the cultural background of the actor)
– You have some acting experience or training (a high school drama class, university course, community theatre role, etc.)
– You have strong memorization skills
TIME COMMITMENT & PAYMENT
First Rehearsal: April 6, 2015
Run: April 23 – May 2, 2015, evening performances with weekend matinees
We normally rehearse from Monday through Saturday from 10:00-6:00 pm but can potentially accommodate work or school commitments by doing a longer rehearsal period with shorter day or evening blocks. This is a professional acting contract and the actor will receive a weekly fee.
HOW TO APPLY
Please email Artistic Producer Ellen Close at ellen@downstage.ca by October 8, 2014 with a clear photo of yourself and a resume with your phone number, email and any acting or theatre experience you have. Please also share any existing commitments you have during the rehearsal and performance dates.
We will be holding auditions on October 18, 2014 at the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts (downtown). For the audition, you will be asked to prepare a monologue from the show and do an interview with director Simon Mallett. We may not be able to see every actor who applies but will let you know either way if we can give you an audition.
