We are still looking for a few good actors for the next two plays of our season.
- Almost, Maine (Sept 25- Oct 4th, 2014 Motel Theatre), a series of vignettes on the theme of love set in the mythical almost-town of Almost (they never did the paperwork to get incorporated properly), Maine. Co-directed by Amanda Cutting and Eric Pettifor. Actors will play multiple roles.
- In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play. Directed by Eric Pettifor. See notes following.
Please email info@acttheatre.ca attaching headshot and resume if interested. If we have already seen you at the generals or subsequent callback, we don’t need to see you for these as we may already be considering you.
Thanks,

In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play (Oct 22- 26th & Nov 2-9th, 2014 West Village Theatre)
Setting: A town in New York State, 1884 or thereabouts. Dr. Givings cures women of hysteria through the use of a new invention, the electric vibrator. This is believed to release a surfeit of fluids accumulated in the uterus, though similar prostate stimulation cures men of hysteria as well (hysteria is much less common in men).
The upper middle classes are portrayed as being somewhat out of touch with the physical, relating to it mostly in scientific terms. And though orgasm (or ‘paroxysm’) appears to have beneficial effects medically speaking, it is not as important as that which is much more difficult for them, namely, relationship. Ultimately this is a romance.
ROLES
Dr. Givings
Doctor specializing in treatment of hysteria
Mrs. Givings
His wife, an intelligent woman whose lively curiosity her husband initially resists.
Mrs. Daldry
Dr. Givings patient.
Mr. Daldry
Husband of Mrs. Daldry.
Annie
Dr. Givings’ assistant. Getting to be beyond marriageable age, but appears not to be overly concerned about that.
Elizabeth
African American house maid, pressed into duty as a wet nurse for the Givings baby.
Leo Irving
An Englishman. Artist. Patient of Dr. Givings.
