Studio Theatre at The Timm’s Centre for the Arts Thesis Production of
Tribes by Nina Raine
directed by Amanda Bergen
Rehearsals from April 13 – May 13, Run dates May 14 – 23, 2015
Billy has returned home after a year away at university to find his family just as dysfunctional as ever. Language and communication are what they focus on the most, and understand the least it seems. Billy was born deaf and taught to speak and lip-read. What his family doesn’t understand is this doesn’t allow him full access to the way they communicate. They forget to face him when speaking, and summarize events instead of explaining them fully, leaving Billy isolated in his own home. His life changes when he meets Sylvia, she teaches him ASL, and introduces him to the Deaf Community where he finds a “tribe” in which he feels accepted.
