News (St. Albert): SACT announces Winter 2014 production

A Christmas Story, The Musical!

St. Albert Children’s Theatre is proud to announce their 2014 winter production.

First released in 1983, A Christmas Story quickly became a family favourite movie and a holiday viewing tradition for many. Now over 30 years later, this nostalgic look at childhood has found new life and has taken Broadway by storm. St. Albert Children’s Theatre will present A Christmas Story, The Musical! from November 27 to December 7, 2014 at the Arden Theatre. Complete with all new songs, this Tony Award nominated stage production propels the original story and all of its crazy hi-jinx into the hearts of a whole new generation.

“A new holiday Tradition is born” – Time Magazine

“I was dazzled” -The New York Times

Based on the memoirs of radio-humourist Jean Sheppard, this classic holiday tale centers on Ralphie Parker, an average nine year old and his dream of owning a BB gun. Not just any BB gun, but a Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action BB Gun. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, Ralphie is faced with one set back after another. Run-ins with a bully, a tongue stuck to a flag pole, a bar of soap in the mouth, a garish leg lamp, a major award and a Chinese Christmas dinner are some of the challenges that stand between him and his beloved Red Ryder.

“I didn’t see “A Christmas Story” until several years after it came out. It was on TV over Christmas, and it just kept repeating, I think I watched it about four times that weekend. When I heard the soundtrack by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, I immediately fell in love with it. It adds so much charm and revitalizes the story to truly make it a modern day holiday classic. It took Broadway by storm and we are thrilled to be one of the first Canadian companies to produce this terrific musical!” says Director, Janice Flower

A Christmas Story, The Musical’s creative team also includes Music Director Rachel Bowron and Assistant Director and Choreographer Jackie Pooke.

Music and Lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul; Book by Joseph Robinette; and based on the Turner Entertainment Company Motion Picture A Christmas Story.

Auditions for A Christmas Story, will be held on June 21 & 22, 2014 at the St. Albert Children’s Theatre’s rehearsal space (#10 – 215 Carnegie Drive).

Tickets to A Christmas Story will be available through the Arden Theatre Box Office beginning June 4, 2014. To stay up to date on St. Albert Children’s Theatre, visit www.sact.ca
