A Note from Vanessa
Our plays this year are friendly and funny, passionate and profound. As always here at ATP, they are meant to be relevant to life as we live it today – they’re about what’s now, what’s new, and what’s next.
And this season, there is a thread running through them. In one way or another, they are about how we need each other. In David Ives’ sharply comic Venus In Fur, the actress needs the director – and he needs her even more, to say what he can’t say himself. In the Enbridge playRites Series of New Canadian Plays world premiere thriller Butcher, victim needs criminal to atone for the past. “You have been my friend,” says Charlotte the Spider in our Nexen Family Holiday Show Charlotte’s Web: this classic story shows that friendship is what life is all about.
In the spring, Canada’s most beloved, hilarious Clowns of Horror Mump and Smoot are back: who could imagine either one of them without the other? Then, the second Enbridge playRites Series of New Canadian Plays world premiere of The Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst, with our friends at Ghost River Theatre, tells the tale of a man drifting so far from the people he needs that he loses track of himself. To close out the season, Becky’s New Car introduces us to irrepressible Becky, who doesn’t realize how much she needs her family until she almost leaves them in her dust.
We need each other – for love, truth, friendship, partnership, sanity, and home. Join us for a great season of theatre.
