1st Annual Art Skirt Design Competition
In 2013 we had a skirt designed and built for the Festival which became the “Official Skirt” for SkirtsAfire 2013. It stood alone in the Nina Art Gallery and audience members posed in it and had their picture taken. Our Honorary Skirt for 2013 was Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk , who also posed with the Skirt and it got lots of media attention. For 2014, we decided that we needed more than one skirt designed for the festival and that we should open it up to a competition.
First Annual Art Skirt Design Competition
We are looking for eight designers to be a part of the Art Skirts Installation for SkirtsAfire 2014. Each chosen designer will have their Art Skirt on display in our Cabaret space during the Festival from March 6-9. Please read the Design Competition Guidelines before applying. Deadline to apply is February 12, 2014. Chosen designers will be notified by February 14th, 2014. The Skirt will need to be built by February 21st and judging will take place over the weekend, with a decision made by Monday February 24. The winning Skirt will then be featured at our media launch on Tuesday February 25, as well as featured in the spring Western Canada Fashion Week at the ATB Financian Arts Barns. In addition to this, the winning designer will receive a cash prize of $200, with the runners up receiving cash prizes of $100 and $50.
Design Competition Guidelines
Eight design proposals will be chosen from pitched submissions. Of those eight, there will be one winning design. The theme of the design is ‘Upcycled‘, so skirt materials should be recycled. Ideally these are skirts that can stand alone and either be worn or stepped into.
All eight skirts will be on display throughout the festival and the winning design will be featured with our Honorary Skirts for 2014, Lynn Mandel and Sarah Chan at our media launch on Tuesday February 25th. There will likely be other media opportunities as we aggressively promote the Festival. Judges will be scoring on creativity, execution, and wow factor.
