Three exciting new plays will be making their way onto Calgary stages in 2014 called The BLACK CANADIAN THEATRE SERIES.
- The Real McCoy by Andrew Moodie
- John Ware Reimagined by Cheryl Foggo
- Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God by Djanet Sears
The Black Canadian Theatre Series (BCTS) is the first event of its kind in Alberta to celebrate the community’s diversity and talent by bringing an inaugural season of 3 plays by Black Canadian playwrights to Calgary audiences. The Series is spearheaded by two of Calgary’s own: Ellipsis Tree Collective’s Artistic Director, award winning actor, writer and producer, Janelle Cooper and award winning playwright, documentarian and historian Cheryl Foggo (winner of 2013’s Sondra Kelly Award and currently working with the National Film Board of Canada to bring a documentary on John Ware to life).
The 3 plays will be presented from February—September 2014 in Calgary and will create a true legacy project for Alberta! All 3 plays tell different aspects of Black Canadian history and heritage that span 150 years. A primary mission of the BCTS is to provide professional opportunities for visible minority artists in Calgary and to bring these compelling stories to the stage.
