The Pick Me Ups is a new play that dives into the best and worst parts of relationships with the people we tolerate, lust after, long for, and love. In this story of five women tumbling through life, the audience is invited to sit in on the venting sessions, pep talks, and outright temper tantrums that barrel through Skype calls, coffee dates and study-huddles between friends.
This new play by Nathania Bernabe is presented as a downtown installation at The Bower, Edmonton’s hot dance spot. Patrons will find The Bower transformed into the cozy Tuck-Away Café, where these girls meet every Sunday to book-end their week with a good catch up. Theatre-goers are invited to take part in the world of the play by enjoying a drink, a treat, and a whirlwind of live action as it sweeps through the venue.
The characters in The Pick Me Ups are our sisters, daughters, mothers, and friends. Their stories beg us to take a closer look at the women in our life and ask, “Are they really alright?” Played by Leah Beaudry, Kayla Nickel, April A Killins, Kristen J Welker, and Kristyn Emmerzael, these characters flaunt the quirk, baggage, and generosity that have made them who they are. Bernabe allows each woman to be dissected from perfection to her own naked humanity and we find that maybe sometimes broken is better.
Magpie Theatre has staged collaborative projects that meld live performance with visual imagery, music and dance since 2010. This production of The Pick Me Ups, directed by filmmaker Katrina Beatty, includes multi media elements to enhance the experience of the Tuck-Away Café. Bernabe has workshopped this piece in London England, Brisbane Australia, and at our own Azimuth theatre in Edmonton. After four years of development we invite you into the Tuck-Away Café for a heart-wrenching coffee date with five women as their voices echo, “How did I end up here?” and they lean into each other to remember what keeps bringing them back.
The Pick Me Ups hits the stage for five performances only on November 24, 25, 26, 27, and 28 with a press preview for the media on Thursday, November 21. All performances play at The Bower, 10538 Jasper Avenue.
Tickets are available from Tix On The Square and at www.magpietheatre.ca. They are $15 for general admission, and $10 for students and seniors. Due to legal restrictions on the venue, this will be an 18+ event.
