Downstage will be revisiting their production of Bus(t) by the Downstage Creation Ensemble for the ABLE Conference in early November and is inviting two emerging theatre artists to join them!

About the show
Bus(t) is a character mask show performed on a parked bus that questions the sustainability of our existence and explores how we discover community in the most unexpected of places. Originally produced by Downstage in 2009, Bus(t) was nominated for Outstanding New Play at the Betty Mitchell Awards.

In the play, there has been a catastrophic financial collapse. Otherworldly debt collectors roam the streets, seizing those who are unable to pay back what they owe. Only those without debt are free to walk the streets unharmed. A lucky few managed to find shelter on a bus when the pandemonium hit. Somehow protected from the danger that lurks the street, this group of people from vastly different walks of life must learn to co-exist in a world now confined to the interior of a bus that cannot escape from its ominous surroundings.

About the role
We are seeking two creation interns who will observe and assist in the rewriting and rehearsal process and act as show runners for the performances, including leading audience members to our off-site bus, playing a small character role as a ‘debt collector’ and assisting the actors throughout the show. This is primarily a volunteer position but an honourarium of $200 will be paid.
Emerging theatre artists with an interest in creation work, mask and/or site-specific performance are encouraged to apply.

Schedule
The project will run from Wednesday, October 23 to Wednesday, November 6.
There is some flexibility around attending earlier rehearsals but you must be available during the following periods:
Sunday, November 3rd – 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Monday, November 4th – 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Tuesday, November 5th – 9:00 am – 8:00 pm
Wednesday, November 6th – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

If you are interested in being considered for this opportunity, please email Downstage Artistic Producer Ellen Close at ellen@downstage.ca. Please include a brief description of why you are interested in this internship, a professional biography or resume, and any existing commitments or scheduling conflicts you have during the contract period (Oct. 23-Nov. 6).
