Call for Submissions (Alberta): 2013 BSMT Dwellers Playwriting Competition – Theatre BSMT/ Alberta Playwrights’ Network


Theatre BSMT in conjunction with Alberta Playwright’s Network (APN) announces the second annual BSMT Dwellers Playwriting Competition!

Applicants must be an Alberta resident who is an emerging playwright. Theatre BSMT defines an emerging playwright as one who is actively pursuing a career in theatre or writing and has some experience and/or specialized training in theatre or writing.

The winning submission will receive a full production by Theatre BSMT (directed by Lindsey Zess-Funk, Artistic Associate at Urban Curvz). The selected play will also receive dramaturgical support from APN in preparation for its production. In addition, APN will provide a one-year membership to APN for the winning playwright.

The successful applicant will be selected by mid December 2013 and workshops will run from January 2014 to March 2014. Rehearsals will run from March 2014 to May 2014 evenings and weekends only. The show will then have a two week run at the EPCOR Centre’s Motel May 7 to 17, 2014.

Application Criteria: Applicants must be an Alberta resident 
- The play should not have been previously produced in its current format
- The play can have no more than 4 characters 
- The play must be 45 to 90 minutes in length

Scripts written by more than one author are acceptable.

Application Deadline: November 30, 2013

How to Apply: Scripts can be submitted by email (with “BSMT Dwellers” as the subject line) by 4:30 PM on the day of the application deadline to:

Please include: A cover letter describing the playwright(s) background and a brief synopsis of the play
- Resume(s) of the playwright(s)
- One copy of the script.
