Clybourne-ParkThe Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program, part of The Citadel’s Robbins Academy, offers an advanced creative development Program to enrich the performance skills of established theatre professionals. Now in its sixth year, this Program, conceived by Citadel Theatre Artistic Director Bob Baker, and under the guidance of Program Director James MacDonald, provides a unique and distinct professional development opportunity to Canadian theatre artists.

The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program is designed to embrace and enhance the artist’s strengths while encouraging the exploration of new concepts. The curriculum of the Program comprises a five-week course of master classes in scene study, movement/dance, singing, voice and speech, stage combat, classical text, improvisation and script analysis by a Faculty of some of Canada’s leading theatre artists. The residency for the Program is divided between Banff (four weeks) and Edmonton (one week).

The Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy is seeking applications from the Edmonton professional theatre community for a second position of Intern Director.

The director will take part in the 2014 Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program as a full participant. Prior to the the five-week training component, they will serve as the Assistant Director on the Citadel’s production of Clybourne Park, directed by James MacDonald.

The position includes:

  • Participation in certain classes/professional development workshops in Banff and Edmonton, including movement, voice, singing, improvisation, stage combat, preparation techniques, mask, clown technique, and text analysis.
  • Assisting the directors of the Scene Study and Creation workshops in Banff
  • Taking part in directing seminars with faculty and participants of the Professional Theatre Program
  • Assisting the coordination of the Professional Theatre Program showcase in Banff and Edmonton
  • Assisting the creative team of Clybourne Park in rehearsal including the director, the designers, etc.
  • Assist the creative team during technical rehearsals.

The dates of the Intern Director Program are Tuesday, December 31, 2013 – Sunday, March 2, 2014 inclusive. The first four weeks of the Program take place in Edmonton (Clybourne Park rehearsals), followed by four weeks in Banff, followed by one-week of further training/professional development in Edmonton.

For the four-week rehearsal period, the Assistant Director will be paid an honorarium of $2,500.00. For the training period, there is no specific remuneration. Room and board, tuition fees, and transportation are fully covered by the Citadel Theatre and the Banff Centre.

The Citadel is specifically seeking applicants from the Edmonton professional community, including established and emerging artists. As such, the successful applicant should be an Edmonton resident. Some professional directing experience is preferred but not essential.
