Crossing Swords by Joe Slabe and the Forte Musical Guild won five awards (and two honourable mentions) on August 4th at the New York Musical Theatre Festival, Calgary musical wins big at New York Musical Theatre Festival, including the Theatre for American Musical Prize.
The show — which debuted in Calgary in 2012 as Jeremy de Bergerac — won for Outstanding Writing (Joe Slabe), Direction (Igor Goldin), Musical Direction (Micah Young), Outstanding Individual Performances (Steven Hauck) in addition to the Theatre for American Musical Prize, which went to Slabe for his music, book and lyrics. (Onalea Gilbertson also won one for Outstanding Individual Performance in David Rhymer and Blake Brooker’s Mata Hari in 8 Bullets, which was also a New York Musical Theatre Festival hit).
