Workshops by Request 2013-2014 Season Update: Spring 2013

Stage Lighting workshopSpring 2013
Through Workshops by Request, Theatre Alberta facilitates learning in all aspects of theatre production including both technical subjects (e.g. stage lighting, scenic painting, design, etc.) and performance subjects (e.g. acting, improv, directing, etc.).

Last year the program supported 19 workshops across Alberta! Here is an update of the workshops we are facilitating this Spring:

Character Development in Devon
Brian Dooley is taking the not-so-long trip from Edmonton to Devon to lead a Character Development Workshop for East of Sixty Productions. East of Sixty wanted to learn more about finding character through textual clues and how to translate those clues into their bodies on stage. Brian Dooley is an actor and director, and he has numerous years of teaching under his belt.

The Actor’s Voice in Calgary
Dawn Sadoway is scheduled to teach a very exciting workshop on The Actor’s Voice for Morpheus Theatre in Calgary. This isn’t a singing workshop: rather, Dawn is going to help participants find their biggest and strongest performace voices! This one-day workshop will focus on how to use vocal technique to help create a grounded performance.

Improv in Jasper
After attending a wonderfully fun Improv workshop in Hinton, members of the Jasper Players (IOTAD) were so interested in having Edmonton improv favourite Matt Alden come to Jasper to teach that they joined Theatre Alberta specifically to host this workshop! Matt will lead participants in saying “Yes!” and finding the magic by being truly in the moment. Welcome to Theatre Alberta, Jasper Players – we are delighted to have you join our community.

Scenic Painting in Taber
We are excited to send retired University of Lethbridge professor Jay Johnston to Taber for a Scenic Painting workshop with the Taber Players. Jay will instruct participants on creating realistic scenery for theatre productions. Wallpaper, paintings, wood grain and other unique surfaces will be covered. Jay is new to Workshops by Request program and comes highly recommended from his former students and colleagues!

Workshops by Request applications are accepted throughout the year, however no workshops are scheduled in July and August. Any community theatre group in Alberta may apply for a workshop through the Workshops by Request program, on any topic of their choice. Professional development opportunities sponsored by a professional theatre company are also considered for support through the program.
