Rabid Marmot Productions will be hosting auditions for their third season production of the award-winning dramatic fantasy comedy, She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen. This production will take place as part of the Edmonton International Fringe Festival, August 15th – 25th, 2013.  Rehearsals will begin in June 2013.

We are looking for dynamic, kickass performers of all backgrounds to join us in bringing this Dungeons & Dragons adventure to the Edmonton fringe stage. As the play involves a lot of stage combat and puppetry, performers with these trained skill sets are strongly encouraged to audition. Agility with a battle axe is a total plus.

Show Description:

After the sudden, unexpected death of her socially-awkward sister Tilly, Agnes Evans’ life is turned upside down when she stumbles upon a Dungeons & Dragons notebook.  She soon finds herself embarking on an action-packed adventure to save her sister’s soul. The quest, of Tilly’s design, is rife with hostile faeries, randy ogres, awkward high-schoolers, and broadswords. Will Agnes discover her own “inner badass,” or will the bugbears get her first? Qui Nguyen, resident playwright of Brooklyn’s Vampire Cowboys theatre, serves up a comedic nerdgasm – a homage to the outcast in all of us.

The original Off-Off-Broadway production was nominated for two Drama Desk awards (Outstanding Costume Design, Outstanding Sound Design in a Play), a 2012 GLAAD Media Award, and won a 2012 ITBA Award.

Roles:

Agnes (Female, Age 25):  An unbelievably “normal,” sarcastic English teacher struggling to cope with her sister’s death who eventually learns to let her inner badass out and her geek flag fly.

Chuck (Male, Age 16 – 19):  A nerd with a grunge rock sensibility. As a Dungeon Master he goes by “DM Biggs.”

Tilly (Female, Age 16 – 19):  Agnes’ teenage sister. Quirky, nerd, cool.

Lilith (Female, Age 16 – 19):  Popular girl next door by day, heroic and sexy Demon Queen by night.

Kaliope (Female, Age 16 – 19):  An athletic Dark Elf who is protective of Tilly. Sexy, fierce, and fiercely loyal.

Orcus (Male, Age 16 – 19):  Former Demon Overlord, current slacker.

Vera/Evil Gabbi/Beholder (Female, Age 25 – 30) :  A guidance counselor and best friend of Agnes. Sassy, foul mouthed and short tempered. She’s not very good at her job. Also, a demon cheerleader and monstrous eyeball.

Farrah/Evil Tina/Narrator (Female, Age 16 – 19):   A demon cheerleader, a trashy, homicidal fairy and a narrator who is not unlike Cate Blanchett in “The Lord of the Rings.” Dance experience is an asset.

Miles (Male, Age 25 – 30):  Agnes’ boyfriend, also known as “The Gelatinous Cube.” He knows very little about D&D.

**Cast members may also be double-cast as various monster-puppet ensemble roles.

Participants are asked to prepare the following:

  • Please prepare 2 monologues of contrasting contemporary material.
  • Participants may be asked to do a cold reading from the script.

Auditions will be held on March 23 and 24, 2013 at Edmonton Public Library’s Strathcona Branch (8331 – 104 Street). Participants must be 18 years or older.  We are unable to engage equity performers.  To book a time, please send an email along with your resume and headshot to Nicholas Mather at info@rabidmarmot.ca.

Payment: Cast members will receive an equal share of the box office profits.

Stage Manager: We will also be looking for an intrepid SM to lead us on our quest throughout the summer. If you think you have what it takes, please forward your resume to Nicholas at info@rabidmarmot.ca
