Theatre Junction GRANDHEAD LIGHTING TECHNICIAN FOR THE THEATRE JUNCTION GRAND
Location: Calgary, Alberta

JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Director of Production, the Head Lighting Technician’s duties include but are not limited to: 



–        Ensuring that all lighting equipment is installed and setup in a proper and safe manner

–        Ensuring that all lighting equipment is setup according to the performance concept

–        Determining use of circuits for lighting plots

–        Hanging and focusing the lighting plots

–        Setup and dismantling of lighting equipment

–        Lead technical crew as needed with a focus on lighting activities

–        Operating lighting systems and related equipment as directed for performances and rehearsals

–        Inspecting and maintaining all lighting equipment, systems and accessories

–        Operating chain motors and assisting with rigging and audio needs

–        Assisting with setup and tear down of all show equipment

  • May also include set up and running of video projection equipment

–        Assist with the maintenance of all technical equipment in conjunction with other Department Heads

–        Maintaining a safe working environment at all times by conforming to all established safety policies and procedures

–        Report all accidents/incidents immediately to the Director of Production, Technical Coordinator and Facilities Manager (Chair of Health and Safety Committee) 


–        Help in maintaining cleanliness of the stage and backstage areas 


–        Carry out various sundry tasks requested by the Director of Production and/or Technical Coordinator which may be outside the scope of lighting activities

–        Abide by all company rules and bylaws as detailed in Human Resources policies 


–        Ensure that internal communications are as efficient as possible and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the technical team 


–        Attend and participate in technical team meetings and the Health and Safety Committee 


QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIRED SKILLS
The ideal candidate shall possess the following: 



–        A minimum of three years experience in theatre and a minimum of two years as a Lighting Technician

–        Extensive knowledge of lighting control systems, lighting hardware and lighting design techniques is an asset

–        Good general understanding of all technical aspects of theatre and live performances

–        Knowledge of chain motors and rigging techniques is an asset

–        Leadership skills with experience leading technical crews

–        Ability to work well under pressure

–        Good communication skills

–        A passion for contemporary theatre and live performing arts

–        General carpentry skills and training considered an asset

–        Experience in dance, live music and other performing arts is an asset

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Theatre Junction GRAND technicians work under a collective bargaining agreement with Local 212 of IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees). Remuneration includes health benefits and RRSP.

Our current main lighting console is an ETC Gio 2K (as of spring of 2012).  The GRAND has 192 dimmers and an instrument inventory comprised mostly from ETC Source 4 fixtures (fixed lens, zoom lenses and “PARS”) as well as some Fresnel and cyclorama instruments.  There are also four 26° ETC Source 4 fixtures assembled with Apollo Right-Arm kits complete with Apollo EZ Iris and Apollo Smartcolor Pro 7.25 scrollers.   Theatre Junction also owns a set of Chroma-Q Colour Block DB4 LED fixtures complete with drivers.

Theatre Junction GRAND is Calgary’s culturehouse for contemporary live arts. We plan our program using a 3-pillar strategy that includes (1) new creation by a resident company of artists, (2) local, national and international presentations of theatre, dance and music, (3) work by community partners such as Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, Springboard Fluid Festival and One Yellow Rabbit.  Theatre Junction at The GRAND also hosts private events in UBU Theatre Lounge and in the theatre and studio venues. The main theatre is a flexible space capable of multiple stage and seating configurations. There are also studio spaces for rehearsals, events and small public performances.
