Call for Creation Intern for Verb Theatre’s
Of Fighting Age

The Show: Of Fighting Age is Verb Theatre’s latest project, created by Col Cseke, David van Belle, and Christopher Duthie, performed by Col and Christopher with Direction by David. A mash-up of modern theatrical techniques and vintage WWII technologies, Of Fighting Age inspects our Grandparents war stories and examines how they shape our understanding of modern warfare.
We can’t say too much more about the project because we’re still building it, but we do know that it will be highly theatrical and slightly participatory, it will question how our nostalgia for our Grandparents war stories have perhaps sanitized our relationship to contemporary warfare, it will not be a traditional “Remembrance Day” play in tone or style, and it will probably make creative use of chalk, projection, Morse-code, a custom I-phone app, and the many other things we’ll devise in the rehearsal hall.
Of Fighting Age will premiere in the 2013-14 Verb Theatre season.
The Position: The Creation Intern will assist the artistic team during a two-week creation workshop in mid-February, and will be mentored in new-work creation by the team throughout the process. Duties will include:
Being present for the two weeks of rehearsal period, assisting the team in the creation of the piece.
Documenting the work in progress, through video, photography, and transcription.
Acting as a surrogate audience member stand in.
Carrying out other miscellaneous rehearsal duties as they arise.
Please note this is an unpaid position.
Dates: February 10th-15th, 18th-23rd. Daytime rehearsal, 10:00am-6:00pm
Ideal Applicant is an emerging artist who:
Has an interest in new work creation and devised theatre.
Has an interest in contemporary social issues and theatre’s ability to engage an audience with such issues.
Technical acumen an asset.
Has open availability for the rehearsal period.
Open to directors, designers, actors, writers, etc.

The creation intern position is a way for us at Verb to work with – and get to know – emerging artists whose work we are interested in, and in turn for those artists to gain experience and insight into our working practice. The three artists creating Of Fighting Age have had the pleasure of working with Ghost River Theatre, Verb Theatre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Downstage, One Yellow Rabbit, The Calgary International Children’s Festival, Theatre Calgary, and have had their work been presented to acclaim across the country. The artists will mentor the intern both through their involvement in the rehearsal process as well as informally by providing guidance, advice, tips, how-to’s, and warnings on any theatrical topic the intern may be interested in.
