THE COLANDER GALS at Trinity Lutheran Church BYOV #29

Featuring Hansi Klemm, Gail Olmstead (music director), Julie Sinclair and Mary Stevenson with dramaturgy by Kristen M. Finlay. Photography by Janine Hodder.

The Colander Gals is a BYOV show at the 2012 Edmonton International Fringe Festival running August 16 – 26. Playing at venue #29 (the air-conditioned!) Trinity Lutheran Church 10014 – 81 Avenue. (Don’t confuse this venue with Holy Trinity Anglican Church – a different Fringe BYOV!)
The Colander Gals is on page 84 of the official Fringe Guide.

What do vegetable hats, ditty-bags and Emily Murphy have in common? Find out with the fictional Tamarack branch of the AWI as they present a musical variety fundraiser. Set in the 1950s, you’ll hear past musical favourites and share in the challenges, laughs and sisterhood of four of the members.

The Colander Gals uses the Alberta Women’s Institute (AWI) organization as a vehicle for telling the fictional story of four rural women from central Alberta. The women come together as acquaintances and neighbours to put on the musical variety show as a fundraiser for the Tamarack Emergency Relief Fund. Through the course of the play (and its accompanying songs), we get snapshots of the lives of these women and the events, both humorous and poignant, which transform them into dear friends.

Inspired by the women of the AWI, the organization’s rich history of women coming together to support each other was an ideal fit for this story. The Colander Gals hopes to pay joyful homage to the hardworking women who helped build our province.

Join The Gals as they try their hand at amateur hypnosis; venture on a backcountry car ride (along with bumps, baby bottles and a little steam heat); try to rid Alberta of its crop-eating pests; and attempt to solve the world’s problems with oodles of strudel.
