No matter how we feel about family, it is the glue that holds us together. But, when painful events and family secrets surface, they must be dealt with whether we will or not.
In JAnATS’ Double Bill production our first encounter is with the retired couple Frank and Leola as they prepare to move to Miami. However, Leola’s not sure she’s ready to leave everything behind. As she sets the table one more time, secrets and regrets begin to surface, threatening their plans.
The second encounter finds Penny in her new house- a fresh start. Her daughter Tess has come to help. As the boxes are unpacked, so is Penny’s past, resulting in unsettling revelations that affect both women.
Both plays are about households in the chaos of moving. Mary Jane Kreisel observes: “the challenge of directing these plays is dealing with the complexity of the characters as they confront upheaval in their lives. The plays each start off deceptively amusing until gradually more and more of the hidden layers of life’s secrets and sorrows are peeled off. What emerges are striking examples of people facing painful realizations yet being able to accept and endure, perhaps even growing as human beings.”
